TEM Open House fosters collaboration among the UWaterloo community
Event held on Tuesday, October 29, 2024
Transformative Quantum Technologies (TQT) and the Quantum-Nano Fabrication and Characterization Facility (QNFCF) hosted a Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) Open House to celebrate one year of the QNFCF’s launch of advanced S/TEM capabilities and explore collaboration opportunities across the UW community. Over 90 attendees came together for the day-long event, which featured presentations, tours, and live sessions.
The event kicked off with opening remarks by Chris Houser (Dean, Faculty of Science). Following the remarks, Nicki Shaw (Senior Facility Microscopist, QNFCF) introduced QNFCF’s metrology facility and provided an overview of TEM, including sample preparation and spectroscopy. Industry representatives from JEOL (Patrick Phillips and Kevin Mcilwrath) and Gatan (Stephen Mick and Andrew Thron) detailed TEM and FIB-SEM applications in nanoparticles, batteries, semiconductors, metals, and quantum materials. The presentations concluded with a talk by Greg Holloway (Electron Beam Lithography Scientist, QNFCF) on the extended capabilities of FIB-SEM such as imaging, milling, and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS).
The afternoon consisted of tours of the TEM and FIB labs, as well as live TEM sessions. During the live TEM sessions, Shaw and Phillips showcased catalytic nanoparticle and semiconductor device lamella samples using the JEOL F200 S/TEM system.
During the event, attendees expressed interest in advanced TEM techniques like diffraction, Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS), and 4D STEM, and explored opportunities to access state-of-the-art equipment and expertise in collaboration with the QNFCF, JEOL, and Gatan.
